Free Listing Service For Rental Homes

Potential tenants and landlords can get free help in finding one another from the Rental Listing Service provided by the City of Dearborn Heights Community and Economic Development Department

Landlords are invited to list their rental property and have the information posted on a bulletin board in the Community Development office at 26155 Richardson. People seeking housed to rent can check with the department in person or by telephone, to find out what is available. There is no charge for this service, to either landlords or tenants.

To list your Dearborn Heights rental, certain facts are needed: rental property location, number of bedrooms, appliances included, utilities included in rent, security deposit, monthly rental fee and any other helpful information regarding the unit.


The landlord's name and telephone number will also be posted and potential renters will call you directly. Listings are posted for 30 days unless otherwise requested. For information on the referral service or to list your rental property call 277-7071


Some Services of Community Development

Money, shelter, transportation, help. Everybody needs some, sometime or another. Dearborn Heights residents have a handy resource for all of them, in the Community & Economic Development Department.

Community Development offers the following services to Dearborn Heights residents:

  • Residential and Rental Rehab loans
  • Free rental listing service-Landlords may list houses for rent
  • Lists of local apartments, mobile home parks,assisted rental housing, subsidized housing for senior citizens, nursing homes and retirement homes
  • Free SMART bus tickets for Senior Citizens
  • "Heights Helpers" list of residents who do household jobs for other residents
  • "Property Availability List" (PAL) of commercial property for rent, lease or purchase

The Community Development Department is located in the Berwyn Center, 26155 Richardson; three blocks west of Beech Daly and two blocks south of Warren Avenue. The office is open and staff is ready to help you Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. If you are unable to visit the office, most of our lists and information can be mailed to you (NOTE: you must appear in person to apply for bus tickets the first time , or to list your services on the Heights Helpers list). Cash In On Your Skills - Joins Heights Helpers

Got a snow shovel ? Know how to put up wallpaper ? Like to walk dogs, watch kids, prune hedges ? Put your handy skills to use and pick up a little pocket change with "Heights Helpers".

"Heights Helpers is a program of the Community and Economic Development Department which acts as a referral service for residents wishing to hire someone to do jobs around their home.

Services offered by Heights Helpers include lawn cutting, home repairs and general "handyman" work, painting baby sitting, assistance for the elderly, house cleaning, and even pet sitting.

THERE IS ALWAYS ROOM FOR MORE WORKERS ON THE LIST !

To get yourself on that list, you must be a Dearborn Heights resident at least 14 years of age. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must sign with you. You must also fill out an application, as well as sign an affidavit indicating that you have read and understand the program's rules and regulations. RESIDENTS INTERESTED IN HIRING a worker may pick up the "Heights Helpers" list at the Community and Economic Development Department office located at 26155 Richardson ( the Berwyn Senior Center). To obtain a list, you must be a Dearborn Heights resident, provide either a valid driver's license , voter registration card, or state ID card as proof of residency, and sign the affidavit. Once you get the list, it is up to you to choose someone from the list, and make arrangements with them as to the hours, wages , and type of work they are to do. This referral service has been very successful for Dearborn Heights residents. If you'd like to find out more, contact the Community and Economic Development Department at 277-7071.


Sec. 8 Gives Families Decent, Safe Housing

Section 8 Existing Housing Program is a federally funded program that provides money to help eligible individuals and families pay their rent. Families and elderly, handicapped or disabled individuals are eligible for consideration for this program if their adjusted incomes do not exceed federally established income limits for the Wayne County area.
If you qualify and are accepted as a participant in the rental assistance program, the amount you pay for rent and utilities may vary in some instances, but generally will not exceed 30 percent of your income. Those who receive Section 8 assistance may stay in their present home or choose a new place in which to live. Either way, the dwelling must be decent, safe and sanitary.

The rental assistance program is offered to eligible families and individuals upon availability of vouchers. If you would like further information, please call the Community and Economic Development Department at 277-7071. THE DEARBORN HEIGHTS SECTION 8 WAITING LIST IS CURRENTLY CLOSED. No applications are being taken.


Commercial List Is Free

IF YOU OR YOUR BUSINESS have property for sale or lease, whether it is a building, a vacant lot, or a built-to-suit situation, a call to the Community and Economic Development Department will put it on the PROPERTY AVAILABILITY LIST (PAL).

PAL is a free service of the Community Development Department, providing a computer printout of commercial and industrial properties located in Dearborn Heights, available for sale or lease. Property owners can provide detailed information about their properties on the PAL, such as lot size, selling price, building dimensions, special features, and any additional information.

REAL ESTATE AGENTS: Use this free service to list commercial properties.

Any interested person or business can obtain a PAL by contacting the Community and Economic Development Department, 26155 Richardson, Dearborn Heights 48127, at 277-7151.


WDHT / CHANNEL 12

Municipal Access cable TV, featuring city government programs and announcements. Semimonthly magazine format show, "Dearborn Heights Today" presents coverage of local news events and features related to government and civic groups, interviews with local news makers.
Senior VIII Video Club produces programs for and by senior citizens. Semimonthly shows feature interviews with experts on topics of interest to seniors and coverage of senior events in and around Dearborn Heights. Club membership is open to anyone age 55 or over. No experience necessary. Weekly meetings Thursdays 1:30 p. m. at the Berwyn Senior Center, 26155 Richardson, Dearborn Heights; 3 blocks west of Beech-Daly, 2 blocks south of Warren Ave. Call 277-7228 for information.

WDHT programs appear at 12,3,6 & 9 a.m. and p.m. daily. Senior VIII programs at 1, 4,7 & 10 a.m. and p.m.. Special programs at 11,2,5 & 8 a.m. & p.m..
